Alexander Rose / Long Now Foundation
Kiasma seminar room : Thursday 27 Jan, 5-7 pm
Language: English

The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide a counterpoint to today's
"faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. The foundation was established by a group of people who have been influential in helping us understand the social and cultural effects of technological development. These people include Stewart Brand and Peter Schwartz (founders of the Global Business Network), Brian Eno ('the father of ambient music') and Kevin Kelly (founder of WIRED magazine). Alexander Rose, the executive director of The Long Now Foundation, will give a presentation about the foundation and its activities.

Our right to vote - a limited form of democracy?
Kiasma Theatre: Friday 4 Feb, 4-7 pm
Language: English

The themes of this discussion are Referendums and direct democracy. Should we possess more power as members of a nation by having a right to vote multilaterally and more often? Or would this conclude to direct populism? Per Norbäck introduces the Demoex-party, a direct democracy experiment. Paavo Arhinmäki (Vasemmistonuoret) and Jiri Räsänen (Leader of The Free World-project) will also participate in the discussion.

Per Norbäck
is a 35-year-old teacher who has put direct democracy through the internet in practice in his home town Vallentuna, located north of Stockholm. After an intensive discussion about democracy he and his students decided to start a non-partisan political party that would make all their decisions with the help of a specially developed e-democracy solution for the internet. They called this party Demoex that stands for "Democracy Experiment". The Demoex internet system is open for all the inhabitants in the city of Vallentuna to join. Demoex took one seat in the local community council of Vallentuna in the elections of 2002.
